The representative of government on the Committee tasked with finding the Black Stars a new coach, Dr Emmanuel Owusu Ansah, has revealed that the state would prefer appointing a local manager over a foreign one.
According to Dr Owusu Ansah, the Sports Ministry would prefer a local coach for the team, although insisting their preference is on quality.
”I’ve been a coach before and I know what it takes to be a coach. All coaches should have a certain theoretical knowledge about principles of coaching. It is only the discipline that differs. So an athletic coach is no different from a football coach. So I’m looking at somebody who has a sound base, sound knowledge about principles of coaching,” said the former National Sports Authority head.
“My preference and the preference of the Ministry is for a local coach, but then like I said we are looking for quality. Personally I will be looking for somebody who is a manager who knows about the principles of coaching, somebody who can manage egos of the calibre of Black Stars players.”
Ghana are on the search for a new coach after Avram Grant called it quits after Afcon 2017. A six member committee, including Dr Owusu Ansah, has been tasked with finding Ghana a new coach.
Other committee members include: Ghana FA president Kwesi Nyantakyi, Black Stars management committee chairman George Afriyie, Ghana FA Technical Director Oti Akenteng, Executive Committee member Opoku Nti and the FA’s Protocol and International Relations Officer Alex Asante.
Former Stars coach Kwesi Appiah has reportedly applied for the job, so if we’re planning a local coach, he would most likely get the nod. Over 70 coaches in total are completing for the vacant position.
