Alfred Oko Vanderpuije Proposes One Six Year Term For Ghana’s Presidents

The newly elected Member of Parliament for Ablekuma South and former Accra Mayor, Alfred Oko Vanderpuije, has got right down to work, proposing a new law to establish a new term of office for Ghana’s Presidents.

The former AMA boss, speaking in Parliament Tuesday, March 7, said the two 4 year terms aren’t ideal and instead should be replaced with one, six year term, with no possibility of re-election.

Summing up the four year term, Oko Vanderpuije said it was not the best. The first year is the bedding in period for a government,with  the second being the only ‘active’ period – when the government is really free to work for the people.

The third year is geared towards gathering financial resources for the upcoming elections, whilst the fourth is relection time.

But with a six year term, with no possibility of re-election, Oko Vanderpuije believes a lot of these issues could be curbed.

“This statement proposes for the consideration of this House, ‘a six (6) year one term of presidency without any opportunity for re-election,”Vanderpuije said on the floor of the house.

“This will save the nation from huge financial burdens in organizing elections and promote proper accountability to the electorates.”
