Government Refuses To Fund Airfare For Black Stars Players To Travel From Europe For Afcon Qualifier So Dede Ayew Picks Up The Tab

This is the kind of kangaroo state we’re running now eh? Where our government is prepared to embarrass the entire country to save a few bucks that would probably end up in personal pockets.
Black Stars deputy captain Andre Ayew has decided to fund the airfare of the 21 foreign based Black Stars players who would travel to the country for the Stars upcoming Afcon qualifier against Rwanda.
Sports Minister Nii Lante Vanderpuye had communicated to the FA that since Ghana has already qualified, government would not foot the bill for the player’s airfare as the qualifier was unimportant. This is despite the fact that everyone knew Ghana would play six qualifiers when budgeting was made for the team, and that failure to make it for even one of them can lead to disqualification. Nii Lante’s reasoning is as flawed as they come.
Since then, the GFA has announced that Ayew has decided to fund the bill for the travelling Stars who cannot foot their own bills, with some of the others who are able to afford it ready to do so.
“The truth is that the players themselves in a massive show of patriotism have decided that they want to pay for their own tickets to come for the match,” Mr Daara said.
“However, there are some players in the squad who are unable to afford the tickets and for that Andre Ayew has decided that he will pay for them to turn up for the game.”
It is a laudable act for a much maligned Stars team, but an incomprehensible move from Ghana’s government.
