Accra-based radio stations-Montie Fm and Radio Gold as well as TV Gold which are owned by the same company-Network Broadcasting Company, with Mr Ato Ahwoi as one of its directors have SHUT DOWN together—in solidarity with the Montie three who were sentenced to 4 months prison time today by the Supreme Court.
Graphic Online reports that, “it was monitoring the two radio stations when it noticed that they simultaneously went off air without any information to listeners. Checks from sources at the station however indicated that they went off air in solidarity with the trio, who have been jailed four months each by the Supreme Court.”
Earlier today, two panellists, Godwin Ako Gunn and Alistair Nelson, as well as the show host Salifu ‘Mugabe’ Maase, received the jail time following a criminal contempt charge brought raised against them by the Supreme Court.
They are also to pay a fine of Ghc 10,000, or in lieu, spend another month in jail.
The owners of the station, which includes Edward Addo, Harry Zakuor, Ato Ahwoi and Kwesi Kyei Atuah – have also been fined Ghc 30,000 each.
Trial judge Sophia Akuffo said the panellists had been irresponsible in their utterances in threatening the judges, and also chastised the owners for not exercising enough control over issues.
Meanwhile, Ghana’s Minister of Foreign Affairs, Hanna Tetteh has said in a facebook post that the judges were unnecessary harsh on the three.
