In what is becoming something of an unfortunate trope, another veteran actor is in dire need of cash to undergo life saving surgery.
William Addo, veteran of both theatre and cinema, is facing a health crisis, and like many others before him, is finding it difficult to raise the requisite cash for the procedure.
Speaking to KMJ on Daybreak Hitz Wednesday, he said he has problems with his eyes, and needs eye surgery that cost Ghc 5,000 he has been unable to raise despite attempts to get help.
“I have to do a surgery on my eye. My vision is very blurry. Doctors diagnosed that it is a combination of glaucoma and cataract and I need to be operated upon otherwise it’s going to cause a fracture,” he said.
The “Death after Birth”actor and Keysoap concert party alumni said he has tried raising the money from several sources, including the Creative Arts Ministry, to no avail. He said the only person who has given him the time of day so far is presenter Kwame Sefa Kayi.
“So far, it’s only Kwame Sefa Kayi who has given me something… I have sent copies of the appeal to Cultural Forum, Ghana Actors Guild, Ministry of Tourism, Culture and Creative Arts and others but I’m yet to hear from them.
“It’s unfortunate. I have served this country faithfully.” He continued. “I was at the School of Performing Arts, we had a scholarship to go abroad for training. Out of ten, only two of us came back because I thought I owed my country a lot. Sometimes, I ask if I made the correct decision. I’m a pensioner who took GHC 3,000 as end of service benefit after serving for thirty years. Sometimes I wonder whether we are living in a country taking notice of your contribution” he sombrely noted.
Addo’s problems comes on the heels of similar problems for veteran actors like Nii Odoi Mensah, all of which points to a pattern of abandonment for those who serve the country but are unable to amass the wealth that their careers couldn’t give them.
