Jada Pinkett is still seething over the fact that no black actor were nominated for Oscars 2016 nomination.
The actress on Sunday hinted at boycotting the 2016 Oscars over the snubbing and marginalization of people of colour. She fumed: “At the Oscars…people of color are always welcomed to give out awards…even entertain. But we are rarely recognized for our artistic accomplishments. Should people of color refrain from participating all together”
But this morning, per a video shared on her Facebook page, the wife of Will Smith has stated categorically that she is boycotting the prestigious awards show, and advises fellow African Americans to also do the same. She further suggested to black actors to create their own awards in order to get the respect and acknowledgement they deserve.
Her full unedited rants below:
Hi today is Martin Luther King’s birthday. And I can’t help but ask the question is time people of colour recognize how much power, influence that we have amassed that we no longer need to asked to be invited anywhere.
I ask the question have we now come to the time and place where we recognize that we can no longer beg for the love, acknowledgement or respect of any group. That may be its time that we recognize that if we love and respect and acknowledge ourselves in a way in which we asking others to do that that is the place of true power.
I’m simply asking a question the question. Here is what I believe; the Academy has the choice to acknowledge whoever they choose, to invite whoever they choose and now I think it that it our responsibility now to make the change. May be it is time we pull back our resources and we put them back into our communities, into our programs and we make programs for ourselves that acknowledge as in ways that we seem fit, that is just as good as the so called mainstream ones.
Here is what I do; Begging for acknowledge or even asking diminishes dignity and diminishes power and we are a dignified people and we are powerful and let’s not forget it. So let’s just Academy do theirs in all grace and love, and let’s do ours differently.
We must stand in our power! We must stand in our power.
