The daughter of former President Jerry Rawlings, Dr Zanetor Rawlings, has survived a challenge against her eligibility to stand as the party’s parliamentary candidate for Klottey Korle in the general elections in November.
In a ruling delivered Friday, the trial judge ruled that the suit, brought by four plaintiffs led by Joseph Botchway, lacked any merit to go forward.
The plaintiffs were challenging Zanetor’s eligibility on the grounds that she was not a registered voter and thus did not qualify to represent the party as its candidate.
Judge Patience Tetteh called the entire thing a waste of resources, and chided the plaintiffs for not exhausting internal party mechanisms before bringing suit.
Dr. Zanetor Rawlings in November last year won the NDC Klottey Korle parliamentary primary.
The 37-year-old nabbed 2,739 to beat the incumbent Nii Armah Ashietey, who pulled 1,348 votes.
Poised for her first challenge to Parliament, some party members in the constituency were not happy and sued her, claiming she was ineligible since her name did not appear on the voter’s register.
