British singer, songwriter and occasional actor, David Bowie, has unfortunately passed away at age 69.
Bowie, who has been battling cancer for the past year and a half, unfortunately succumbed to his ailment. The news was confirmed by a post on his official Facebook page.
“David Bowie died peacefully today surrounded by his family after a courageous 18 month battle with cancer.” The post read.
“While many of you will share in this loss, we ask that you respect the family’s privacy during their time of grief.”
Tributes have been pouring in for the rock star who inspired several artisans to follow the path to their dreams. Kanye West wrote that “David Bowie was one of my most important inspirations, so fearless, so creative, he gave us magic for a lifetime.”
Ricky Gervais, who once worked with Bowie and just hosted the Golden Globes ceremony, wrote “I just lost a hero. RIP David Bowie.”
British Premier David Cameron also said: “I grew up listening to and watching the pop genius David Bowie. He was a master of re-invention, who kept getting it right. A huge loss.”
Born David Robert Jones, he released 25 albums in his career as well as acting in several films. He changed his name early in his career to avoid being confused with another artiste- Davy Jones of the Monkees.
His last album, ‘Blackstar’, was released just last Friday, to coincide with the celebration of his 69th birthday.
