One of the greatest honours any human being can be afforded is being studied by other humans, mostly after they’ve been dead for a long time and their ideas have had a big impact on the world in one way or another.
Millions of students have to go through this every year, sometimes resenting these long dead crones making their lives difficult from beyond the grave. But looking at the two personalities involved in these new courses in Texas it’s a guarantee no one would be bummed out; in fact enrolment would probably shoot through the roof.
Global pop icons Rihanna and Beyonce are set to become subjects of new courses being pioneered by the University of Texas. Dubbed “Beyonce Feminism” and “Rihanna Womanism”, the courses are designed to examine these two iconic ladies and their roles in modern day feminism.
The website of the University promises the course would focus on “how the lyrics, music, videos and actions of these women express various aspects of black feminism such as violence, economic opportunity, sexuality, standards of beauty, and creative self-expression”
So students interested in exploring issues such as ‘feminism’ and ‘womanism’ should enrol, and the addition of Queen Bey and Ri-Ri would help pull in students who might probably not be interested in any of those themes but just want to experience how a class based on those two would proceed like.
I know if I was in Texas right now I would be enrolling for that course.
